Stills from The Importance of Doing Art

"Susannah Dalton’s 'THE IMPORTANCE OF DOING ART,' now playing at 59E59 Theaters, takes that kind of self-serious nonsense and turns it into a funny, chaotic mess - part buddy comedy, part dating disaster, part art-world parody. It’s got some great moments…
The story’s simple enough: Jack (Billy Cosgrove) decides the best way to impress women is to pretend he’s an artist. His friend Sam (Mateo Parodi), gets dragged along for the ride, not because he believes in the idea, but because Jack’s too relentless to say no to. Their apartment is a disaster, their plan’s terrible, and their confidence is wildly undeserved, which is exactly what makes it entertaining…Parodi, as Sam, has nice comedic timing and plays off him well. He’s got this dry, skeptical vibe that helps ground the whole thing." - Stepehen Kearley (Hi! Drama)

The play, written by Susannah Dalton and directed by Jose Ignacio Vivero, marked Mateo's Off-Broadway debut.
